Mini-mart robber gets 45 years in prison...

A San Joaquin County Superior Court sentenced a Sacramento man to more than 45 years in prison Friday for a series of mini-mart robberies. Michael Haynes, 28 originally faced 24 charges of robbery in Solano, Yolo, Sacramento, and San Joaquin counties. He was convicted of 12 charges of robbery. The robberies took place in March 2000 and ranged from Stockton to Sacramento to Davis with multiple robberies sometimes occurring on the same night. The jury also found Haynes used a gun during the commission of some of the crimes, which tacked on an additional 25 years onto his sentence. At the sentencing Haynes asked Judge Richard Mallett to throw the jury verdict out and grant him a new trial. "I wanted to take the witness stand, but my attorney would not allow me" Haynes said. "That was bad judgment on my attorney's part. Mallett refused saying there was enough evidence to support the convictions. "I looked for circumstances in mitigation (of the crimes), and there aren't that many of them" Mallett said. Haynes maintains his is a case of mistaken identity and that he is innocent of all charges.
